Hovhannavank Monastery
Description
Hovhannavank Monastery is a medieval monastery in Ohanavan village, in Aragatsotn Province. The monastery is situated near the village of Ohanavan on the rim of the Kasagh River canyon.
The complex consists of a single-naved St. Karapet basilica from the fourth century, the St. Karapet main church from the 12th century, the narthex from the 13th century, churchyard, obelisk monument, winged khachkar and khachkars in the walls, school and congregation buildings, and a monastic complex enclosure.
Hovhannavank Monastery was a major educational and theological center, as well as a place where manuscripts were written and illuminated.
